Artek 68 Chair by Alvar Aalto (Birch)

Artek 68 Chair by Alvar Aalto (Birch)

The Artek Model 68 chair was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1935 as the chair counterpart to his iconic Model 60 stool. Made in Finland from solid birch with a birch veneered seat, it showcases the timeless simplicity and functionality that define Aalto's work. These four chairs we have in stock are from the 1950s and were upholstered before. The upholstery has been removed and the seats have been refinished, the veneer on the seat therefor also shows beautiful knots in them which normally doesn't show on the chairs, but this gives these chair extra character and makes them more unique.

A key feature of the design is Aalto's innovative L-leg construction. By cutting narrow grooves into solid birch, the wood could be bent into shape before being glued, creating a strong and elegant joint. This pioneering technique became one of the defining innovations of modern furniture design and predates the widespread use of moulded plywood.
